I sent money to the wrong UPI ID. How can I get it back?

Short answer
Raise a complaint immediately in your UPI app under that transaction and call your bank with the UPI reference number. The bank will contact the recipient's bank, but because you authorised the payment, a refund usually needs the recipient's consent. If that fails, escalate through NPCI's dispute portal and the RBI Ombudsman.
What to do
- Try contacting the recipient if the name or number is shown, and request a refund.
- Raise a dispute in the app and inform your bank with the UTR number.
- File a complaint on the NPCI website under “UPI Complaint”.
- If unresolved after 30 days, approach the RBI Ombudsman.
If it was fraud
If someone tricked you into paying, call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in immediately — quick reporting gives the best chance of freezing the money. Never enter your UPI PIN to “receive” money; a PIN is only needed to send.
Prevent it next time
Always check the recipient's verified name before you enter your PIN, and send ₹1 first when paying a new account a large amount.
