    Credit Cards

How many credit cards should I have?

    Short answer

For most people in India, two or three credit cards is ideal: one everyday cashback or rewards card, one card for your biggest category (online shopping or travel), and optionally a lifetime free backup. More cards are fine only if you can track every due date and pay each bill in full.

Why more than one card helps

    • Higher total limit — spreading spends across cards keeps your credit utilisation low, which supports your CIBIL score.
    • Better rewards — no single card is best at everything. A 5% online card plus a travel card usually beats one all-rounder.
    • Backup — if one card is blocked or declined, you still have a way to pay, which matters while travelling.

    When more cards hurt

    • Each application triggers a hard enquiry; several within a few months make lenders cautious.
    • Annual fees add up — only keep paid cards whose benefits you actually use.
    • More due dates means more chances of a missed payment, which damages your score far more than any reward is worth.

Space out new applications by at least six months, and keep your oldest card open — the age of your credit history counts towards your score.
