What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?
Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team
Short answer
Most banks want a CIBIL score of 750 or above for a personal loan at their best rates. Between 700 and 749 you can usually still get approved, sometimes at a higher rate. Between 650 and 699 options narrow to NBFCs and fintech lenders, and below 650 you will typically need a secured loan or a co-applicant.
What different scores usually get you
| CIBIL score | Likely outcome |
|---|---|
| 750+ | Best rates, quick approval, higher amounts |
| 700–749 | Approval likely; rate may be 1–3% higher |
| 650–699 | NBFCs and fintechs; lower amounts, higher rates |
| Below 650 | Unsecured loans difficult; try gold loan, loan against FD or a co-applicant |
Score is not the only factor
- Income and job stability — salaried applicants at large employers are preferred.
- Existing EMIs — total EMIs including the new loan should usually stay below 50–60% of take-home pay.
- Recent enquiries and defaults — even with a decent score, a recent missed payment can lead to rejection.
Low score? Safer alternatives
A gold loan or a loan against a fixed deposit needs little or no credit check and costs less. Avoid unregulated instant-loan apps — check that any lender is RBI-registered first.
