What is a loan processing fee?

    Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team

    Short answer

A processing fee is a one-time charge a lender takes for evaluating and sanctioning your loan. It is usually 0.5% to 3% of the loan amount plus 18% GST, and is typically deducted from the money disbursed to you. On a ₹5 lakh personal loan, a 2% fee means about ₹11,800 less in your account.

    Typical processing fees

    • Personal loans: 1–3% + GST
    • Home loans: 0.25–1% + GST, often capped at ₹10,000–₹15,000
    • Car loans: a flat ₹2,000–₹6,000 or a small percentage

    Other one-time charges to check

    • Documentation or stamp duty charges
    • Loan insurance bundled into the loan (it is optional — you can decline it)
    • Legal and valuation fees on property loans

    Can you avoid it?

Banks often waive or cut processing fees during festive offers, for existing customers and for strong profiles. Ask — it is one of the easiest parts of a loan to negotiate. Compare offers using the APR on the Key Fact Statement, which includes these fees.
