    How FD interest is calculated

    Most Indian banks compound fixed deposit interest quarterly. The maturity value is:

    A = P × (1 + r ÷ k)k × t

    where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, k the number of compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly) and t the tenure in years. Because of compounding, the effective annual yield is slightly higher than the quoted rate.

    Things to keep in mind

    • FD interest is taxable at your slab rate; TDS applies above ₹50,000 a year per bank (₹1 lakh for seniors).
    • Senior citizens usually get 0.25–0.50% extra.
    • Breaking an FD early typically reduces the rate by 0.5–1%.
    • Deposits up to ₹5 lakh per bank are insured by DICGC.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which is better: quarterly or cumulative FD payout?

    A cumulative FD reinvests the interest and pays everything at maturity, so it grows more. Choose a monthly or quarterly payout only if you need regular income.

    Is FD interest taxable?

    Yes. It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, whether or not TDS is deducted. Submit Form 15G or 15H if your total income is below the taxable limit.
