How much emergency fund should I have?

    Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team

    Short answer

Keep at least six months of essential expenses — rent, EMIs, groceries, bills and insurance premiums — in an emergency fund. If your income is irregular, you are the only earner, or you have dependants, aim for 9–12 months. Hold it in a high-interest savings account, sweep-in FD or liquid fund, not in stocks.

    How to calculate yours

    Add up essential monthly spending. Example: rent ₹15,000 + EMIs ₹10,000 + household ₹15,000 + bills and insurance ₹5,000 = ₹45,000. Six months = ₹2.7 lakh.

    Build it before you invest

An emergency fund stops you from breaking investments or taking expensive loans when something goes wrong. Build it first, alongside adequate health and term insurance, then start long-term investing.
