UPI payment failed but money was debited — what should I do?

    Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team

    Short answer

Wait a little — most failed UPI payments are reversed automatically, and RBI requires the reversal within one business day (T+1). If the money is not back by then, raise a complaint in your UPI app under the transaction and with your bank. Banks must pay you ₹100 for every day of delay beyond the deadline.

    Step by step

    1. Check the transaction status in your app — “pending” often resolves within a few hours.
    2. If still debited the next business day, use “Raise dispute” or “Help” on that transaction.
    3. Note the UPI reference number (UTR) and contact your bank's customer care.
    4. If not resolved within 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

    Compensation rule

Under RBI's turnaround-time framework for failed digital transactions, if a failed UPI payment is not reversed within T+1 days, the bank must automatically credit you ₹100 per day of delay.
