What is the difference between loan settlement and loan closure?
Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team
Short answer
Loan closure means you repaid the full amount and the account is reported as “closed” — good for your credit score. Settlement means the lender accepted less than you owed and wrote off the rest; the account is reported as “settled”, which lenders view as a default and which can lower your score for years.
Comparison
| Closure | Settlement | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount paid | Full dues | Partial (lender waives the rest) |
| Status on report | Closed | Settled / written off |
| Effect on score | Positive | Strongly negative |
| Future loans | Normal | Often rejected for several years |
Should you ever settle?
Only if you genuinely cannot repay and have tried restructuring or EMIs. If you settle, get the agreement in writing, pay exactly as agreed and collect a settlement letter.
Fixing a settled account later
When your finances improve, you can approach the lender, pay the waived amount (sometimes with interest) and ask them to update the status to “closed”. Always get a No Dues Certificate and check your report afterwards.
