How PPF interest works
PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month, and credited once a year on 31 March. The calculator assumes you deposit your yearly amount before 5 April, which earns the maximum interest:
Balance at year end = (previous balance + yearly deposit) × (1 + rate)
Key PPF rules
- Deposit between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 every financial year.
- Lock-in of 15 years; extend in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
- Interest and maturity are completely tax-free; deposits qualify for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction under the old regime.
- The rate is set by the Government every quarter — 7.1% at the time of writing.
