What is the UPI transaction limit per day?
Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team
Short answer
The standard NPCI limit is ₹1 lakh per UPI transaction for most payments. Higher limits apply to specific merchant categories such as tax payments, hospitals, education, insurance and capital markets. Your bank or app may set a lower daily limit and a cap on the number of transactions, and new users often have a reduced limit for the first 24 hours.
Common UPI limits
| Type of payment | Typical limit per transaction |
|---|---|
| Person-to-person and most merchant payments | ₹1 lakh |
| Tax payments, hospitals, education | Up to ₹5 lakh |
| Capital markets, insurance and some other verified merchant categories | Higher limits, set by NPCI per category |
| UPI Lite (without PIN) | ₹1,000 per payment |
Why your limit may be lower
- Each bank sets its own daily cap within the NPCI limit.
- Apps may limit the number of transactions per day.
- After a new device registration or PIN reset, a lower cooling-period limit may apply.
Check your bank's current limits in its app. For large transfers, NEFT or RTGS through net banking is often simpler.
