What is UPI Lite and how does it work?
Updated · CardKhoj Editorial Team
Short answer
UPI Lite is an on-device wallet inside UPI apps for small payments without entering a PIN. You load up to ₹5,000 from your bank account and can pay up to ₹1,000 per transaction. Payments are faster, work even when your bank's servers are busy, and do not clutter your bank passbook.
Key features
- Maximum balance: ₹5,000.
- Maximum per payment: ₹1,000.
- No UPI PIN needed for each payment.
- Auto top-up can be enabled when the balance falls below a level you choose.
Is it safe?
Because no PIN is needed, anyone with your unlocked phone could spend the UPI Lite balance — which is why the limits are small. Keep a screen lock on your phone and disable UPI Lite if your phone is lost.
