Why the minimum due is a trap
Credit card interest in India is typically 3–3.75% per month — 36–45% a year — plus 18% GST on the interest. The minimum due is usually only 5% of the balance, so most of each payment goes to interest and the balance barely falls.
How this calculator works
- Each month, interest (plus GST) is added to the balance.
- Your payment is then deducted: either the minimum due (a percentage of the balance, with a floor of ₹200) or the fixed amount you choose.
- It assumes no new purchases on the card.
Cheaper ways out
- Convert the outstanding to an EMI plan (often 13–18% a year).
- Take a personal loan at a lower rate to clear the card.
- Move the balance to a card with a balance transfer offer.
Frequently asked questions
How is credit card interest calculated in India?
Interest is charged daily on the outstanding amount from each transaction date at the monthly rate (for example 3.6%), whenever you do not pay the full statement balance. GST at 18% is added to the interest.
Does paying the minimum due hurt my credit score?
Paying the minimum due on time does not count as a missed payment. But carrying a large balance keeps your credit utilisation high, which can lower your score, and the interest cost is very high.
